Online Sales Jump Is Not All Imports

This week retailer Gerry Harvey has been campaigning for the government to lower the GST-free threshold on goods bought overseas on the Internet. He says the trend is hurting retailers and denying the tax office of $1 billion in revenue.

The latest Forrester Research, commissioned by PayPal, shows that local retailers are not losing out. While imports are up domestic Internet sales have increased too. To ensure they remain competitive though, local retailers need to ensure that online they offer the range of products and sizes provided by overseas competitors. Many local retailers continue to sell the same range and sizes that they offer in-store.

In this edition of BTalk Adrian Christie, Head of Communications at PayPal Australia, says local online retailers need to be concerned less about prices overseas, and more focused on range and customer experience.
