Futurist and broadcaster Ken Rutkowski says people are giving out more information about themselves through social media than they could possibly imagine.
He reckons our camera is perhaps the biggest influence on how social media will develop. How much of yourself do you give away every time you post a photograph? Will software start to recognise the restaurant you are in, figure out how often you eat there, and determine your wealth and aspirations accordingly.
It’s an example of how richer data sets will drive marketing activity in the future. It’s also why your business should be investigating how it can use these new channels to reach customers and, increasingly, to monitor and understand their behaviour.
And, as Ken suggests in this podcast, a lot of this understanding will come from the cameras on our mobile phones.
