The UK’s Labor leader Ed Miliband gave a rather unsual interview this week. He answered five questions with exactly the same answer, almost word for word.
It’s an approach that seems to be used increasingly by politicians trying to control the sound bites used in the media. Unfortunately for Miliband, the BBC ran the full interview on it’s website and the interviewer, Damon Green, wrote about the surreal experience on Twitlonger.
So, are PR people to blame for this one dimensional approach to media interviews? Should you follow the same approach with your interviews, so you stay on message? Not unless you want to look like as big an idiot as Miliband.
Catriona Dixon says his problem was he didn’t expand on his views. Her PR company, Toothless Parrot, trains Aussie corporate spokespeople, so they don’t have a Miliband moment when facing the media. Instead her advice is simple; prepare, know your stuff and be human.
In the meantime, isn’t it nice to know that we’re not the only country suffering a political talent deficit?
