At last week’s CommsDay Congress in Melbourne Greens senator Scott Ludlam warned that data retention legislation could be tabled in Parliament as early as this month.
That came as a surprise to John Stanton, CEO of the Communications Alliance, who said that there were many details still to be worked out with the Attorney General’s department.
John Lindsay, former CTO at iiNet, is one of many in the industry concerned about the proposals – particularly if it allows authorities to ferret around for information.
So, will it happen? Ludlam reckons it’s a real possibility. “Senator Brandis is off the chain and out of his mind and we can’t allow this to happen on our watch,” he said.
