The National Trust has announced it will ditch investments in fossil fuel companies, like BP and Shell. Do the fossil fuel companies care?
I went on TalkRADIO to explain how these big companies really don’t suffer if shares change hands because they’ve already got the money from the sale of shares. What happens next only matters if prices fall and they want to raise money through a new share offering, which is unlikely to happen.
The only benefit for the planet will come if the National Trust uses its money to invest in alternative energy start-ups, which is, of course, a riskier investment. Meanwhile, someone else will snap up their BP and Shell shares and take the dividends, thankyou very much.
