This week, how must the Queen be feeling given the lack of enthusiasm for her 60 year celebrations. I also ask whether the miners are taking us for a ride. Plus, it’s 100 years since Charles Dickens was born and, in memory of the greater writer, you are invited to attempt, as I did, to read out a sentence from one of his books which are, as we all know, incredibly long with very little opportunity for you to draw breath.

Clive Palmer said this week that he was thinking of joining Gina Rhinehart and buying up shares in Fairfax, along with other magnates wondering what to do with their spare cash. Why spot there? Why not pay to become President of the Republic of Australia, then he could exert total control on what we think. This is discussed in today's programme, along with the need for more casinos and the new criminal underworld - cyclists who refuse to wear a helmet.

Today's Daily Telegraph ran the usual line about the government being weak on asylum seekers. It tapped into the Australian fear that the place is being run over with Afghanis looking for a simple life on the dole down-under. Their story looked at how refugee acceptance rates in Australia are so much higher than they are in the UK. The interpretation is that it's because our government is soft on border patrol - the alternative view point is that those who sailed over water might have a more genuine case than those who travel overland to Europe. It should also be noted that the number of refugees from the Middle East is far greater than those arriving in Australia, as graphs in this edition of Balls Radio clearly demonstrate.

Today’s Federal Court ruling on the Optus TV Now case is a shocker. It will almost certainly be appealed to the High Court, but it shows how out of touch the law is with the influence of the Internet. The ramifications if it goes unchallenged could be signficant, and spread across how clod content is provided. The law obviously needs to change, but we have to be careful that there’s not a knee jerk response that looks after the vested interest of major players and removes the benefits that the internet can provide.

Today on Balls Radio I question the logic of outsourcing so much to the public sector, as Basrry O" Farrell pushes ahead with the running of Sydney ferries. What is it that a ferry company, run by someone with no experience in passenger operations, can do so much more efficiently than a government body? I ask whether, if we're looking for someone who can ferry thousands of people with minimal cost, why not hire one of the people smugglers locked up in our gaols?

Wayne Swan should have put on a green Robin Hood outfit when he pulled off the dual task of returning the budget to surplus (just) and helping the poor (a little). But he missed out on lots of other tax opportunities, like turning Connroy's proposed internet filter into a paywall, so you pay the government to access porn. It's the lack of such imaginative new ideas that explains why the Budget was usurped in the news that matters stakes this morning with the revelation that you can now donate your organs via Facebook. Just don't post photos.

What happens when you unfollow someone in Twitter - a new tool letsyou know who has stopped hanging on to your every word. What if they take it badly? Balls radio also celebrates Sydney’s hottest day in 70 years with talk of sex, hetro and homo style. And asks, why shouldn’t gay people be forced to marry? That plus more of Clive Palmer - just when you thought there could be no more of Clive Palmer.

Today on Balls Radio we ask whether Greece could solve its debt crisis by selling the naming rights to its islands. There are so many of them and the exposure to tourists could be an excellent opportunity to promote your brand. Imagine sitting in the sun on the Greek Islands of Domestos. In fact, as discussed in this program, so many of them already sound like household products, so its hardly a major adjustment – and the obliteration of your ancient history is a small price to pay to keep the EU happy and get your books back in order.

Despite the rumours, Gina Rinehart will not be plucking at puberty, the first born of each family from remote Burmese hill tribes, to come and work on her massive Roy Hill iron ore mine. No, the migrant labour will consist of people who choose to come here. She can’t help it if people from the east won’t come because it’s too far and the coffee’s lousy. And you won’t hear too many people in the media talking out against her plan – basically, because they’ve realised that, at some point, they’ll end up working for her.

The world’s economy is in tatters, so isn’t it time we rebooted the world and when back to how things were. To an extent we’re already doing that. The Brits are re-embracing the royals. Here in Australia we want to return to the halcyon days of the Ruddocracy – but what if we went back further. In the mid 80s we had far less debt and generally people were nicer to each other. What if we could reboot and reload a backup file that took everything back to 1985?

If he doesn’t pull his finger out and write an opera that is better than any music that went before, isn’t there a risk of a people’s uprising? For the rest of us, though, this episode marks the first broadcast edition of Balls Radio. Each week's program will be edited down to two half hour podcasts. This one features a new regular guest in the shape of technology writer Stilgherrian, who talks about the integration of banks and social media. And, in light of the UK's Olympic secuirty fiasco, I ask, with the help of management consultant John Seddon, why do we always believe private firms can do a better job than the public sector.
When the Palestinians killed members of the Israeli Olympic Team in the 1972 Munich Olympics was it because the group, Black September, sounded like a funk band? It's a warning for those organising the security in London, that what looks like a boy band might actually be a subversive group bent on destruction. Best to lock them all up until the games are out of the way. Possibly for longer than that. We'll also hear from Stilgherrian about state sanctioned cyber crime. Could evil types be hacking in to nuclear power plants and causing an explosion when we're not looking. And a Balls Radio listener even manages to find a Nuclear Power Station connected to Facebook. Plus, a quick guide to becoming a Daily Telegraph journalist.

In this half hour economist Steve Keen explains the Libor rate – just another example of how banks that profess to operate in a free market see fit to fix things for their own interests. David Campbell reviews the film Ted, which it seems doesn’t stand the test against the great movie classics of all time. And I question Amanda Vanstone’s references this week to asylum seekers as destination shoppers.

Also, was Eddie McGuire’s often incoherent commentary an intrusion on an otherwise excellent Olympics Opening Ceremony? And is the welfare state worthy of celebration at a time when the Tory government in Britain is trying to slash costs and the union movement in Australia is blighted by dodgy secretariats?

Like the Herald’s Paul Sheehan who wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald that since 1972 the Mulsim proportion of the population has grown twentyfold. Hardly surprising since prior to 1972 Australia was living under the disgrace of the white Australia policy.

It’s set in the future, but it’s also happening in our parliamentary system. This week Balls Radio looks at the musings in parliament, with the help of feminist and commentator Jane Caro, as well as looking at the latest Judge Dread movie – which is dreaf-ful apparently (according to David Campbell).

The Treasurer Wayne Swan released his mid-year budget review this week, trimming the size of next year’s budget surplus to $1 billion, but only after significant budget cuts. But why? Is it so imperative that the government returns the budget to surplus when the world economy is so precarious? Economist Steve Keen talks about how cutting back on public spending could be exactly the wrong thing to do. The failing austerity measures in Europe provide an interesting case in point.

The opposition has been relentless beating up the Prime Minister over her involvement in establishing the Australian Workplace Reform Association. It’s been used as a tactic to portray Julia Gillard as unsuitable for office. In this edition of Balls Radio former Liberal Leader John Hewsen describes it as part of a race to the bottom of politics. And Brisbane barrister asks, given some of Julie Bishop’s history, was she the best person to launch an attack on the Prime Minister last week.
